Using the AI Study Assistant
Each assignment has an AI Study Assistant. It is a chat that knows which assignment you are working on. It helps you understand the topic and think through your ideas. It will not write your assignment for you.
Opening the Assistant
- Open an assignment from My Assignments. The editor opens.
- At the top of the screen, use the view switcher:
- Split View: the chat on one side and your writing on the other
- AI Only: the chat fills the screen
- Editor Only: your writing fills the screen
- Type your question in the box that says "Ask a question about your assignment..." and press Enter to send. Press Shift+Enter for a new line.
A message can be up to 500 characters long.
To hide the chat, choose Editor Only. To bring it back, choose Split View or AI Only.
On a narrow screen, such as a phone, the editor shows one panel at a time. Use the switcher to move between the chat and your writing.
What You See in the Chat
- Your teacher can see this chat. This line is always at the top. Your teacher can read your conversations with the assistant.
- History (clock icon): opens your earlier conversations for this assignment.
- New Chat (plus icon): starts a fresh conversation.
- Sources: some replies list the sources they used. Click a source to open it.
- If your teacher chose to limit the assistant to class materials, you see "Your tutor uses only your teacher's materials for this assignment."
What the Assistant Can Help With
- Explaining a concept or a hard word in simpler terms
- Helping you understand the assignment instructions
- Asking you questions that help you plan and organize your ideas
- Giving feedback on an idea or a sentence you wrote
- Pointing you to sources you can read
If you ask it to write a paragraph or an essay for you, it will help you think it through instead. Read its explanation, then write your answer in your own words. Do not paste replies from the assistant into your work. Your teacher can see both the chat and how your writing was typed. See Writing Authentically.
Writing Coach
If your teacher turned it on, the Writing Coach can review your draft for spelling, grammar, word choice, and organization. After you have written about 200 words, the chat may show "Ready for a writing review?" with a Check My Writing button. You can also start a check from the editor. See Using the Editor.
When the Assistant Is Not Available
You may not see the view switcher or the chat at all. In that case the editor fills the screen. This happens when AI help is turned off for you. If your teacher wrote another activity for you, a line at the top of the editor starts with What to do instead and describes it.
AI help can be turned off for these reasons. When an AI feature is refused, Limudi shows the matching message:
| Message | What it means |
|---|---|
| Your teacher has turned off AI help for this assignment. | The teacher chose no AI for this assignment. |
| Your teacher has turned off AI help for this class. | The teacher chose no AI for the whole class. |
| Your teacher has turned off AI help for you. | The teacher turned AI off for your account. |
| Your school has turned off AI help. | Your school does not use AI help. |
| AI help is turned off until your school has your parent or guardian's consent form. | Your school is waiting for a signed consent form. |
| Your parent or guardian asked us not to use AI help for your work. Everything else works as normal. | A parent or guardian opted out. |
| AI help isn't available for your year group yet. Your teacher can tell you more. | AI is not offered for your year level. |
| AI help is unavailable because this class has no year level set. Ask your teacher to set it. | Your teacher needs to set the class year level. |
You can still write, save, and submit your work without AI help. Ask your teacher if you think AI should be on.
After you submit
Once you submit an assignment, the chat for it is closed. You see "This assignment has been submitted. Chat is locked." You can still read the earlier conversation.
Usage limits
Your school may set a limit on how much you can use the assistant. When you have used 80% or more, a line under the chat box shows how much you have used and when it resets, for example "AI Study Assistant: 85% used today · resets in 3 h".
When you reach a limit, the chat tells you. Some examples:
- "AI is paused until tomorrow. You can keep writing. Your work saves normally."
- "You have reached this week's AI limit. Ask your teacher or school administrator for help."
Limits and reset times are set by each school, so they are not the same for everyone.
Your teacher also sets how many messages one conversation can have (15 unless your teacher changes it). When you reach it, the chat says "You have reached the maximum number of questions for this conversation." Click New Chat to keep going.
Tips
- Ask specific questions. "What is the difference between a claim and evidence?" works better than "help".
- If an answer is unclear, ask the assistant to explain it another way.
- Check important facts in a reliable source. The assistant can make mistakes.
- Write your own answer after you understand the idea.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can my teacher see my AI conversations? A: Yes. The chat shows Your teacher can see this chat.
Q: Does using the assistant hurt my grade? A: Asking questions to learn is what it is for. Copying its words into your work is not allowed.
Q: The assistant gave me wrong information. What should I do? A: Check the fact in a reliable source. To report a problem, open the account menu in the sidebar and choose Help & Feedback.
Q: Can I make the assistant's answers easier or harder? A: There is no setting for this. Your teacher may set a language level that guides how the assistant writes. If an answer is hard to follow, ask the assistant to explain it more simply.
Q: Is the assistant the same as Lumi? A: No. The Study Assistant helps with your writing inside the assignment. Lumi, opened with Help (the owl icon), answers questions about using Limudi.
Q: Why can't I find the chat in my assignment? A: AI help is probably turned off for you or for this assignment. See "When the Assistant Is Not Available" above.
Q: How do I hide the chat? A: At the top of the screen, choose Editor Only in the view switcher. Your writing then fills the screen. To bring the chat back, choose Split View or AI Only.
