Using the Editor
When you open an assignment, your writing goes in the editor on the right (or on the whole screen in Editor Only view). This article explains its tools.
The Toolbar
The toolbar sits at the top of the editor and is always shown.
On a computer with a wide editor, every tool is in one row:
- Undo and Redo
- Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, Superscript, Subscript
- Font Family and Font Size
- Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3
- Text Color, Highlight Color, Clear Formatting
- Bullet List and Ordered List
- Alignment (Align Left, Align Center, Align Right, Justify) and text direction (Left-to-Right, Right-to-Left)
- Citation tools: Cite selection, Insert Citation, Insert Footnote
- Horizontal Rule and Insert Page Break
- Add Link, Insert Image, Insert Table, Code Block
- Page View or Continuous View
- Find (find and replace)
- Spelling & grammar
Hover over a button to see its name.
On a phone, or when the editor is narrow, the toolbar shows the most used buttons (undo, redo, bold, italic, underline, and lists). Click the arrow at the right end (More formatting) to see the rest, sorted into tabs: Style, Paragraph, Insert, and Tools. Click it again (Hide formatting) to close them.
Images and tables
- Insert Image adds a picture from your device into your writing. It must be an image file of 5 MB or less.
- Insert Table adds a table with three rows and three columns. Click inside a table to see Table actions, where you can add or delete rows and columns, change borders, or delete the table.
Page view
Page View shows your writing as pages, like a printed document. The bottom of the editor then shows the page number. Use the gear next to it to choose the page size (Letter or A4) and margins.
Right-click menu
Right-click in the editor (or press and hold on a touch screen) for spelling suggestions and Cut, Copy, and Paste.
Spelling and Grammar
Click Spelling & grammar in the toolbar to turn automatic checks on or off. They are on when you start. Misspelled words get a red wavy underline and grammar problems a blue wavy underline. Right-click a word to see suggestions.
Limudi does not use yellow underlines. Yellow on your text is the highlighter color, and other marks can come from your browser or an extension.
Grammar checks use AI. If AI help is off for you, or your teacher set the Writing Coach to control grammar help, the panel says so.
Writing Coach
If your teacher turned it on, the Spelling & grammar panel has a Check My Writing button. The Writing Coach reviews your draft for spelling, grammar, word choice, and organization. Depending on your teacher's settings, it highlights problems, gives a hint, or suggests a fix. It marks spelling with a red wavy underline, grammar with an orange wavy underline, word choice with a solid blue underline, and organization with a purple line at the left. After a check you may need to wait a short time (Wait 30s, for example) before the next one.
Citations
Use citations to show where your information comes from.
- Click Insert Citation to open the Citations panel.
- Choose a Citation Style (APA 7th, MLA 9th, IEEE, Chicago 17th, or Harvard). If your teacher already chose one, it is locked and shows "Citation style set by instructor".
- Click Add Source and fill in the details. If the source has a DOI, Limudi can look up the details for you.
- Click Insert in Text on a source to add the citation where your cursor is.
You can also select some text and click Cite selection to attach a source to it. A References list builds itself under your writing.
Saving and Restoring
Your work saves automatically. The bottom of the editor shows Saving..., then Saved!. If you see Not saved, see Drafts and Offline Editing.
To go back to an earlier version, click the clock icon (Restore Draft). Choose a version from the list and click Restore. This replaces what is in the editor now.
Downloading, Printing and Sharing
Click the share icon (Export) in the toolbar:
- Download As: PDF Document, Word Document (.docx), or Markdown (.md). On a phone or tablet the file opens in a new tab.
- Share: creates a link that others can use to download your work. Choose the format and how long the link lasts (1 hour to 30 days). You can also require a password or limit the number of downloads. Click Generate Link, then Copy Link or show the QR code.
Pasting Text
You can paste text into the editor. Pasted text is highlighted in light blue, and your teacher can see that it was pasted. The first time you paste in an assignment, a Pasted Text Tracking message explains this.
Some teachers set a limit on how much you can paste at once. If you go over it, a Paste Limit Exceeded window offers to shorten the text to the limit. Some teachers turn pasting off entirely. Then you see "Pasting is turned off for this assignment."
If your teacher allows quotations, pasting text from a source may ask whether to Insert as Quotation or Insert Normally.
The best way to show your own work is to type it yourself. See Writing Authentically.
Accommodations
Your teacher or school can turn on accommodations for you. You only see the ones that are on:
- Read Aloud: reads the assignment instructions out loud.
- A dyslexia-friendly font, larger text, or high contrast in the editor.
- Audio submission: a microphone button in the editor. Record your answer (up to 30 minutes), click Upload audio, then submit as usual.
- Extra time and breaks on timed assignments. See Working on and Submitting Assignments.
Working with Classmates
Some assignments let you write together with classmates. You only see these tools if your teacher allowed collaboration.
When your teacher makes the groups
Click the round people button at the bottom right of the editor to see your group. Everyone in the group writes in the same document. If you have no group yet, a banner offers Request a Group so your teacher can add you to one.
When students start sessions
- Click the round people button at the bottom right and choose Start New Session.
- Tick the classmates you want to invite, then click Start and Send Invites (or Start Session to invite nobody yet).
- Others can also join with the share code shown in the panel. They type it under Join by Share Code and click Join Session.
When a classmate invites you, you get a Collaboration Invite notification. Open the assignment, click Assignment Details, and open Collaboration Invites to accept or decline.
In a session a classmate started, only that classmate can submit. You see Session creator submits. Click Leave Session to go back to working alone.
Discussion and Private Messages
The chat bubble icon at the top of the screen opens the assignment's Discussion. If your teacher allows it, you can also send your teacher a private message there. See Discussions and Messages.
