AI Assistant Issues
This guide helps you resolve problems with the Limudi AI writing assistant (the Study Assistant), including when it won't respond, gives unexpected answers, or is turned off.
The AI Assistant Won't Respond
If you send a message and get no response (a loading spinner that never finishes):
- Check your internet connection: AI responses need a stable connection
- Wait and retry: AI providers can have brief delays at busy times. Wait 30 seconds and try again.
- Refresh the page: do a hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R / Cmd+Shift+R) and click New Chat
- Try a shorter message: very long messages can occasionally time out. Try splitting them into smaller questions.
AI responses appear as they are written. If a response starts and then stops mid-sentence, the connection was probably interrupted. Send the message again.
AI is paused or a usage limit appears
AI access can depend on school, class, account and assignment settings, consent or safety restrictions, and usage limits over different periods.
- Read the exact notice. If it shows a time or date, use that information; do not assume every limit resets at midnight or in your school's time zone.
- You can generally continue writing without AI assistance. Whether you can edit or submit an assignment also depends on its status and your teacher's settings.
- If you see "Conversation Limit Reached", click New Chat to start a new conversation.
- If the notice is unclear, access does not return as shown, or the pause is unexpected, ask your teacher or school administrator, or use Report an issue in Lumi. Include the exact notice, the affected screen and when it appeared; do not include passwords or other students' personal information.
Lumi cannot inspect your remaining allowance or change access restrictions. See AI Quota Management for administrator guidance.
The AI Gave Inappropriate or Incorrect Information
The AI assistant is designed to help with learning but is not perfect. If the AI:
- Gives factually wrong information: don't use it without checking. Cross-check with your textbooks and other trusted sources.
- Seems off-topic: rephrase your question and try again. Add more context about your assignment.
- Gives inappropriate content: tell your teacher, or use Report an issue in Lumi (click Help in the toolbar)
Always check AI-generated information. The AI can make mistakes, especially on specialized topics. Your teacher's instructions and trusted sources come first.
The AI is Completing My Work Instead of Helping Me
Limudi's AI is set up to guide your thinking. It should not write your assignment for you. If the AI seems to be giving you content to copy:
- Rephrase your request: instead of "Write a paragraph about X," try "What are the key points I should include about X?"
- Ask questions: the AI is designed to answer questions and explain ideas. It should not produce ready-to-submit content.
- Use it for feedback: ask "What's missing from my paragraph?" instead of "Write my paragraph"
If you believe the AI is ignoring these limits, tell your teacher or use Report an issue in Lumi.
My AI Conversation History is Gone
AI conversations are saved per assignment. If you don't see previous messages:
- Check you're in the same assignment: conversations are linked to one assignment
- Open History: click History in the chat panel to see your earlier conversations for this assignment
- Reload the page: history loads when the assignment opens, so a reload may bring it back
After you submit an assignment, its chat is locked. You'll see "This assignment has been submitted. Chat is locked."
AI Features Are Completely Disabled
If you don't see Split View and AI Only at the top of the workspace, AI help is turned off for you on this assignment. Possible reasons:
- Your teacher turned off AI help for this assignment, this class, or for you
- Your school turned off AI help
- AI help isn't available for your year group, or the class has no year level set
- Your school doesn't have your parent or guardian's consent form yet, or your parent or guardian asked that AI help not be used
If your teacher wrote an alternative activity, it appears at the top of the workspace after What to do instead. Contact your teacher or school administrator to find out why AI help is off.
AI Responses Are Very Slow
If AI responses take more than 30 seconds:
- Check your connection speed: a slow connection slows down responses
- Start a new conversation: very long conversations can slow down responses. Click New Chat to start fresh.
- Try again later: AI services can be slower at busy times
AI Said It Can't Help with My Assignment
The AI may decline to help if:
- The question involves content that goes against school safety rules
- The topic is outside what the AI is set up to help with
- The request looks like it is asking the AI to complete the assignment
What to do:
- Rephrase your question to focus on learning and understanding
- Ask your teacher for clarification on the assignment
- If you believe the refusal was wrong, try a different phrasing or contact support
Privacy and AI Conversations
Your AI conversations are:
- Stored securely and linked to your account
- Visible to your teachers and school administrators
- Included when you download your data: open the account menu, then Settings > Privacy & Data Settings > Your Data Rights
For full details on how AI conversation data is handled, see Privacy and Data Security.
