Grading Submissions
You grade on the review page. Grades and feedback save automatically, and the student sees nothing until you return the work.
Opening Submissions
- From an assignment: click Assignments in the sidebar, then View Submissions on the assignment card. Click Review Submission on a student's card.
- From Student Work: click any row with a submission. Use the awaiting review chip to see work waiting for a grade.
- From the Gradebook: click a grade, or click an assignment title to open its submissions.
- From Notifications: click a Submission Received notification.
The Submissions Page
The submissions page for an assignment lists every student who has submitted. Students who have not submitted are not listed here; use Student Work to see them.
- Sort: Student Name, Grade, Authenticity (most concerning first), Status, or Submitted (newest first).
- Status: All, Submitted, Graded (Unreleased), or Awaiting Revision.
- Switch between card view and list view with the icons on the right.
Each card shows the status, the authenticity result, the quiz score, milestones completed, the grade and the number of comments. Cards for submissions that need a closer look have an amber or red edge.
Statuses
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Submitted | The student handed it in. You have not graded it. |
| Graded (Unreleased) | You saved a grade. The student cannot see it yet. |
| Awaiting Revision | You sent it back for changes. |
| Released | You returned it with a final grade. |
Adjusting all grades
When more than one submission is graded, Adjust Grades lets you add or subtract points from every graded submission at once, or move letter grades up or down. A preview shows the new mean, lowest and highest grade before you apply.
The Review Page
The review page has:
- A header with the student's name, the status, Previous student and Next student arrows, and how many submissions are graded.
- The Authenticity & Progress Overview panel above the work. See Using Authenticity Insights.
- The student's work, with a toolbar for Annotate, Comments and Spell Check, and zoom buttons.
- The Grading panel on the right. Use Hide grading panel to give the work more room.
Entering a Grade
- Without a rubric: type the grade in Grade. It is a percentage, points out of the assignment's maximum, or a letter from a list, depending on the assignment's grading scale.
- With a rubric: under Grade by Rubric, enter a score for each criterion (or click a cell in a matrix rubric). The grade is calculated for you. If you type a different grade, a warning appears with Reset to rubric.
Write general comments in Overall Feedback.
There is no save button. The header shows Saving... and then Saved.
For AI help with the grade and feedback, see AI Grading Suggestions.
Commenting on the Text
- Select text in the work. An Add comment button appears next to it.
- Click it, type your comment, and click Add (or press Ctrl+Enter).
Click Comments in the toolbar to open the comments panel. There you can edit, delete or resolve your comments. Students see your comments after you return the work.
Comment Bank
The Comment Bank keeps feedback phrases you use often.
- In the Comments panel, click the bookmark icon (Comment Bank). Type a phrase in Add a new phrase..., add an optional category, and press Enter.
- To save an existing comment, click Save to comment bank on it.
- Edit or delete phrases in the Comment Bank dialog. Each phrase shows how many times it was used.
Your Comment Bank is personal. Other teachers do not see it.
To use a saved phrase, select text to comment on. When your Comment Bank has phrases, an Insert from saved phrases... list appears under the comment box. Pick a phrase to put it in the comment box. It replaces any text already in the box.
Annotate
Click Annotate to draw on the work with Draw, Underline and Highlight in the color you choose. Use Undo or Clear All to remove marks. Annotations save automatically, and students see them after you return the work.
Spell Check
Click Spell Check to underline spelling mistakes in the work. Click an underlined word to see suggestions.
Returning Work
The header has two buttons:
- Return Final sends the grade and feedback to the student. They can see them but cannot revise.
- Request Revision sends the work back so the student can edit and resubmit. You must write feedback or at least one comment first.
Until you return it, the grading panel shows: "This grade is saved. Your student cannot see it until you release it."
The student gets a notification when you return their work. If the class is linked to Google Classroom or another platform, the grade is sent there too.
Returning several at once
- On the review page, open the More menu (⋮) and choose Return Multiple. Tick the submissions and click Return Selected. They are returned as final.
- On the Student Work page, tick rows and click Return to Students or Request Revision.
After returning
You can still change the grade, feedback, comments and annotations. The student sees the changes the next time they look. No new notification is sent. You cannot clear the grade of returned work, only change it.
After a return, the header shows one button to switch between Return for Revision and Mark as Final Return.
Group Work
On a collaborative assignment, each group member appears as a separate submission. Grading one member's submission grades the whole group, and returning it returns every member's copy. Open Show authenticity details to see Collaboration Contributions: each member's edits, pastes and share of the work.
The More Menu
The More menu (⋮) on the review page has:
- Export Submission: download the work as PDF or DOCX, with comments, feedback and grade.
- View Full Activity Log: open the student's activity for this assignment on the Journeys page.
- Return Multiple: return several submissions at once.
Keyboard Shortcuts
Press ? on the review page to show the shortcuts:
- J: next student
- K: previous student
- Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on Mac): save and go to the next student
- Ctrl+Shift+Enter (Cmd+Shift+Enter): return and go to the next student
