Understanding Language Levels
The language level tells Limudi's AI how complex its language should be and what to expect from your students' writing. It works for foreign-language classes and for students writing in their first language.
Limudi stores levels on the A1 to C2 scale of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
Level Guide
| Level | Writing complexity |
|---|---|
| A1 | Simple words and basic phrases |
| A2 | Basic everyday language and short texts |
| B1 | Clear everyday language with basic opinions and descriptions |
| B2 | Complex texts covering abstract and concrete topics |
| C1 | Well-structured writing for academic and professional purposes |
| C2 | Sophisticated, precise language at mastery level |
Most schools see each level with its ACTFL name as well, for example B1 / Intermediate. Schools in Israel see the Ministry of Education bands with Bagrut points (A1 to B2), and Israeli universities see the Pre-Basic to Exemption ladder (A1 to C1).
Where You Set the Level
- On an assignment: when you create an assignment, pick a level in the Language Level field on the first screen. To change it later, open the assignment's Edit Assignment page and use Language Level on the General tab.
- For one student: open the class from Classes, click Settings next to the student, and open the Language level tab. The AI chat uses it when the assignment has no level of its own.
When you choose a class in the creator, Limudi suggests a level from the class's grade. You can change it or clear it.
Which Level Is Used
For AI chat, Limudi picks the level in this order:
- The level set on the assignment
- The level set for the student
- The class's level
- Your school's default level
- A level suggested from the class's grade
What the Level Affects
- AI chat: the assistant matches its vocabulary and sentence length to the level.
- AI grading suggestions: language expectations match the level set on the assignment, so a B1 class is not held to C1 vocabulary. Set the level on the assignment if you want AI grading to use one.
- Milestones: AI-generated milestones use the assignment's level.
- Quizzes: comprehension questions use the assignment's level.
Suggested Levels by Grade
Limudi uses these suggestions when you have not picked a level:
| Grades | Suggested level |
|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | A1 |
| 4 to 6 | A2 |
| 7 to 10 | B1 |
| 11 to 12 | B2 |
| College and university | C1 |
Which Level Should I Choose?
- Foreign language classes: match the level to your curriculum's target for that year. A second-year Spanish class might use A2 or B1.
- First language classes: the levels describe writing complexity, so they work for native speakers too. Start with the suggested level for the grade.
- Mixed classes: choose the level that fits most students, then set a different level for individual students in their Settings.
