Creating Assignments
Click Create Assignment in the left sidebar. You can also click Create assignment on a class page, which starts the assignment for that class.
Step 1: Choose the Type
| Type | What students do |
|---|---|
| Essay / Writing | A full writing assignment with a rich text editor, milestones and full authenticity analysis. |
| Short Response | Quick answers in a simple text box, with AI chat and paste detection but no typing pattern analysis. |
| Collaborative | Students write together in real time on a shared document. |
| Discussion Thread | Students post a response to a prompt, then reply to classmates. |
| Multi-Part Project | Opens the project creator. See Creating and Managing Projects. |
For Collaborative, choose Group Formation: Teacher-managed (you assign students to groups) or Student-managed (students form their own groups, with an optional maximum group size).
Click Get Started.
Step 2: Essentials
Fill in:
- Title
- Instructions
- Classes: pick one or more classes.
- Language Level: see Understanding Language Levels.
- Due Date
For a Discussion Thread, the due date is called Reply Deadline, and you can also set a Post Deadline (when the first post is due) and Expected Replies (how many classmates each student should reply to; tracked, not enforced).
Optional:
- AI Grading Expectations: the Grading Scale (percentage, points or letter grade), Maximum Points for points, and the Spelling & Grammar and Grade Distribution settings for AI grading.
- Add class context for AI (optional): background the AI should know about your class.
- Require Source Materials: students must attach or cite sources before submitting.
Smart Start
Click Use Smart Start, paste your assignment instructions or describe what students should do, and click Generate Setup. AI fills in the title and instructions. Your classes, due date and language level are kept. If you already wrote a title or instructions, Limudi asks before replacing them.
Click Continue. The assignment is saved as a draft.
Step 3: Groups (Collaborative, Teacher-managed only)
Under Assign Groups, enter a number of students per group and click Auto-Assign, or use Add Group and add students yourself. Click Save Groups. You can skip this and assign groups later. Students without a group see a waiting message.
Step 4: Enhance
Everything here is optional. Click a card to open it:
- Grading Rubric: build or import a rubric. See Setting Up Grading Rubrics.
- Writing Milestones (Essay / Writing only): checkpoints that help students pace their work. Limudi creates milestones automatically after the Essentials step; open the card to review them.
- Files & Links: upload documents or add links students should use.
- Starting Template: a structure students start from, such as an outline, a table or section headings.
- Timed Essay: turn on Enable timed essay, set a Time Limit (min) and an optional Grace Period (min). The timer starts when the student begins and cannot be paused, unless the student has the Timed Breaks accommodation.
Click Review & Publish.
Step 5: Review and Publish
Check the summary and click Publish. To publish you need a title, instructions, a class and a due date. Click Save Draft to finish later.
If you chose several classes, each class gets its own independent copy of the assignment. The copies for the second and later classes get a simple rubric that students do not see, so check the rubric on those copies if you use a matrix rubric or share it with students.
The footer also has Back, and Discard to delete the draft.
Changing an Assignment Later
Open Assignments in the sidebar, click the ⋮ (Actions) menu on the assignment card, and choose Edit Assignment. Changes save automatically, and there is also a Save button.
